Troy Parrott signing a new contract at Tottenham Hotspur has not impressed Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy, per The Irish Times.
What’s the word?
Parrott has already won one senior cap for his country, despite making just two first-team appearances for Spurs, against Colchester United in the EFL Cup under Mauricio Pochettino and Burnley in the Premier League under Jose Mourinho. They amount to 71 minutes of professional football.
He has been prolific at youth level, though, scoring 30 goals in 36 games across all age groups, while he has also scored at every youth level he has been capped at by Ireland.
And with a Euro 2020 playoff against Slovakia looming, McCarthy has admitted that he wanted Parrott to leave the club on loan in the January transfer window.
Asked if he was pleased with the striker’s new deal, which runs until 2023, he said: “Not really.
“I wish he’d gone to Charlton and played games on loan.
“It’s great for him financially, he’s got a new contract but I wish he was playing football somewhere. He couldn’t go out before because of his age and I understand that but if he’s not playing competitive football he has very little chance of being in the squad.”

Misunderstood
McCarthy just hasn’t understood the complexities of the situation here.
Sources say that Spurs did indeed consider sending Parrott out on loan, with the player keen on the move.
However, UEFA regulations, per The Daily Telegraph, state that a player needs to have been registered at a club for three unbroken consecutive years to qualify as a club-trained player in a competition such as the Champions League.
Parrott joined the club at the age of 15 and turned 18 on February 4th, following the close of the transfer window.
While sources say that Parrott would have welcomed the chance to play regular football – Charlton, as McCarthy alludes to, were interested – the club’s hands were tied in this instance.
So, really, the former Sunderland boss has taken this situation at face value without bothering to do any actual research into why he was forced to remain in north London.
McCarthy could get his wish in the summer, though, given that the period of time required for Parrott to stay at Spurs has now elapsed.
Meanwhile, Spurs’ Player of the Season has surely been decided!
