According to German outlet Bild (print version via Sport Witness), Everton have been offered the chance to sign RB Leipzig playmaker Emil Forsberg, while Leicester, Tottenham, Manchester United and Arsenal have also been afforded the same opportunity.
The 49-cap Sweden international has found game time hard to come by at RB Leipzig this season, making only ten starts in the Bundesliga.
However, he has still managed to be quite productive, netting five goals and also grabbing two assists.
Forsberg also has three Champions League goals to his name, and a solitary strike in the DFB-Pokal.
Despite his obvious class – he notched eight goals and 22 assists in the 2016/17 Bundesliga season, while Timo Werner has also hailed him in the past – Everton should avoid taking up the opportunity to sign him.
Why? Well, doing so would go against Marcel Brands’ vision for the club.
Everton’s Sporting Director outlined last year how he feels the Toffees need to invest in younger players rather than older options, pinpointing the captures of Lucas Digne, Yerry Mina and Richarlison as examples – he also added that Everton don’t want to spend big money on players who are older.
“The players we brought in last year were all under 25 so we don’t want to invest big money in players who are older. Everton is a club that also has to sell players so it is necessary to get younger players to invest in. That’s why we invested in young players last summer. [Lucas] Digne was 24, [Yerry] Mina 23, Richarlison 21; so we look to players in the age group 20-25/26.â€
In that case, bringing a 28-year-old Forsberg to Goodison Park – a man who may well only have about two or three years left of his prime – would seem contradictory to Brands’ statement.
Their captures of starlets such as Moise Kean and Richarlison are much more in line with the Dutchman’s vision for the club, rather than the experienced Swede who has found himself in and out of the XI under Julian Nagelsmann.
Additionally, the likes of Bernard and Andre Gomes started the Toffees’ last Premier League outing on the bench, so it doesn’t seem as if there’s any need for another central midfielder at the club.
