According to a recent report from Correire dello Sport, Gary Cahill could be set for a move away in the near future. The Englishman currently plays his football at Premier League giants Chelsea and has done so since moving there from Bolton Wanderers back in 2012, although a lack of regular football under new manager Maurizio Sarri has called his future at the club into question.
And reports suggest that AC Milan are keen on a move for the 32-year-old defender, as should Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, who should seek a reunion with his former England teammate in a bid to seriously strengthen his Gers backline, and thus their Scottish Premiership title hopes.
The Breakdown
Ultimately, one of the biggest tasks facing the Liverpool legend when he walked through the door at Ibrox during the summer was solidifying the defence, what with the Light Blues shipping more goals than any other side that finished in the top seven of the Scottish top-flight last season.
And the 38-year-old did just that by luring the likes of Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic north of the border, while a late move for free agent Gareth McAuley added even greater strength and experience to his ranks – add in the arrival of Joe Worrall, and Gerrard oversaw quite an overhaul.
And while they started the season very strongly at the back, keeping five clean sheets in their eight Europa League qualifying matches, they have since shown vulnerabilities in keeping just one clean sheet in their last seven league matches, and only two in all competitions since the end of September – compare this to four clean sheets in five for Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic.
And with Goldson perhaps not as strong as he was at the start of the season, and fellow centre back Katic having yet to rediscover his pre-injury form, Gerrard should again be on the lookout for further reinforcements at the back in a bid to seriously boost his side’s genuine title hopes – Cahill could be the man.
The 32-year-old may not have featured too readily under new Chelsea boss Sarri this term, playing just 21 minutes of Premier League football so far, but that doesn’t detract from what an outstanding centre back he has been at the top level in recent years – there’s a reason he has appeared 288 times for the Blues in the last six years.
In fact, it was only a matter of years ago in which the Englishman played a key part in helping Antonio Conte’s Chelsea team win the Premier League title – he remains a hugely adept centre back, and also one that possesses a vast amount of trophy-winning experience that can only benefit a Rangers side striving for silverware.
Yes, with the likes of Goldson, Katic, McAuley, and Worrall, Gerrard certainly has options at his disposal in the heart of the defence, but bringing Cahill in would benefit the club not only on the field, given he is still a great defender, but also off it as well given what he has won over many years at the top of the game – he’s the sort of figure one would want in a title race.
Gerrard himself will know what a fine player and leader Cahill is after their time together with England in years gone by, which is why the Rangers boss must seek to reunite with the 32-year-old, in a move which would seriously boost his side’s hopes of overthrowing rivals Celtic in pursuit of the Scottish Premiership title.
